What would you do if you found an injured fawn, or an orphaned squirrel? Would you know to give it no food or water? Would you know to keep it warm, and quiet and in a dark place? If you did those things, then what?

The Sierra Nevada Group of the Sierra Club will address this issue at their next General meeting on the evening of October 19, 2007 with a presentation by Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release located in Penn Valley.

Karen Freidig will bring live birds of prey: a white-tailed kite and a western screech owl and tell the rehab story of a Golden eagle. She will briefly discuss the state of the wildlife in our area including habitat loss, secondary poisoning and how to live in harmony with our wild neighbors.

Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release, a not-for-profit, all-volunteer organization, does not charge a fee, but asks for donations to help cover the costs of food, housing and medical care for their "educational birds" as well as to help them continue their work of caring for wildlife in need. All funds go directly to helping wildlife in seven counties of the California foothills and the valley below.

Their volunteer "rehabilitators" are trained and licensed by the California Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Fish and Wildlife. The organization depends on donations to cover the $25-$300 cost per animal for supplies and veterinary services. All wildlife in cities, riparian communities, oak woodlands, Ponderosa pine forests and open grasslands are served. Each year their wildlife teams successfully release over 500 different species of native wildlife, including mammals, songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, reptiles and amphibians.

For more information and to see the list of items to donate, see their website at www.CaWildlife911.org

Come to the Seaman's Lodge at 425 Nimrod Street, October 21. Join us for a potluck at 6:30. The meeting begins at 7:30. The meeting is free and the general public is invited.
