Kirkwood Increases Number Of Women Participating In The Sport Of Skiing And Snowboarding
For years, Kirkwood has been offering exclusive programs just for women and girls in an effort to grow the number of women participating in skiing and snowboarding. Nationally, the participation has remained relatively stable but a recent study at Kirkwood reveals the resort has grasped the emerging women's market by investing in women specific programs and gear.
Kirkwood has seen a steady rise in women visiting the resort up 4 percent over the past three years. The National Ski Areas Association data reflects a flat percentage rate over the past few years at 39 percent participation by women.
"With a concentrated effort, we aim to make their visit comfortable, safe and easy," stated Allon Cohne, resort director of marketing. For the second year, Kirkwood has partnered with Burton Snowboards, the world's leading snowboard manufacturer, to offer a Women's Learn-to-Ride Center geared to providing new riders with a comfortable first-time experience. This program is the only program of its type in South Lake Tahoe, combining women's specific gear with women only group lessons.
The program includes specially designed gear and training programs to accelerate the beginner learning curve, therefore enhancing the learning experience. Kirkwood has the area's largest women-specific Burton snowboarding gear available – from lower-volume boots to more flexible boards, all designed exclusively for a woman's body.
This season, Burton is adding the Learn-to-Ride Pow program at Kirkwood. The only program of its kind in the country, Burton will combine its technology with the coaching power of top instructors for students who want to ride deep powder.
A special Women's One Day Ski Clinic with Lynsey Dyer, one of North America's top female professional skiers, is set for Dec. 15, 2007. This 1996 Junior Olympic gold medalist and 2003 North American Freeskiing Champion, has nine freeskiing titles and has appeared in a variety of ski films and magazines.
Women's One Day Ski and Board Clinics are for strong intermediate through expert. Female coaches share their secrets to all-mountain skiing and riding success. They focus on skill development for handling all terrain and snow conditions, finding the best line and off-piste ski techniques. Clinics include lunch and video analysis (weather permitting).
Kirkwood's Two Day Ski and Board Clinics, March 15-16, 2008, are designed by women for women and allow participants with similar goals and reservations to work together to overcome challenges. Certified instructors provide tips on technique, reading a slope and terrain selection. Lunch and video analysis (weather permitting) are included and the first day ends with a wine and cheese reception with a display spotlighting all of the latest gear and fashions. Women-specific gear will be available for demo along with special pricing on equipment.
The clinic's second day provides more time on the mountain to explore and hone your newly acquired skills while receiving individual feedback from instructors. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive feedback from video analysis to help understand and visualize their form and techniques for progression.
