The Sierra Club and other conservation groups are aging and there is a strong need for young people to carry on the work. The Sierra Nevada Group of the Sierra Club will address this issue at their next General Meeting on the evening of September 23, 2007 with a presentation by Debra and Tom Weistar, founders and directors of Synergia Learning Ventures. The Weistars have taken on the task of inspiring youth to become the stewards of the earth.
Like endangered species, young conservationists have to be identified, understood and appreciated in an environment in which they can thrive. Synergia Learning Ventures is a non-profit organization that provides outdoor and education adventure programs for youth and families. The Weistars have created group adventures for their students, which are varied and challenging.
One example is a video they produced about the Bear River. The Weistars introduced their students to ranchers, fisherman, hunters and others who use the Bear River and property around the river. They also took video footage of this little known river. The students recorded their interviews and then combined it with the footage to make a documentary about the Bear River. In the process, the students learned many important lessons about a riparian habitat, the cultural and historical impacts, both positive and negative, on the ecosystem of the Bear River.
This promises be an interesting and informative evening. The public is invited to our General Meeting and admission is free. We will meet at Seaman's Lodge, Pioneer Park, Nevada City located at 425A Nimrod Street,
Please join us in a potluck starting at 6:30pm. Bring your favorite dish to share, your own utensils and beverage and socialize. The program starts at 7:30 pm.
