GOLETA, CA September 4, 2010 - The Labor Day weekend is traditionally a time when families mark the end of the summer by relaxing and spending time outdoors. The Los Padres National Forest is a popular destination thanks to its many recreational opportunities from the Big Sur to Mt. Pinos, and Ojai to the Santa Barbara front country. Whether it is hiking or biking trails, campgrounds, or the solace found in Los Padres’ many wilderness areas, each year thousands of visitors flock to the Forest over the three-day weekend.
By following a few simple safety guidelines, visitors can make personal and family safety a priority while enjoying the Los Padres over Labor Day.
Make sure to call ahead to get the latest conditions, and leave your itinerary with a friend or family member. Always hike or travel in pairs or groups, and take along a good map of the area. Bring extra clothes, food, water, a flashlight and first-aid kit. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition with an adequate supply of fuel. Watch for slow-moving traffic and, when parking, do not block traffic or other roads.
In the event you do become lost or injured, remain calm and dry and seek shelter from the elements, but do not stray from your planned route. Remember, cell phones do not work in many areas of the forest.
