September 2, 2010 - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District has awarded a $2.2 million contract to JAG Construction Inc. for levee improvements along the American River in Sacramento. The small business contract was awarded Aug. 31.
Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), the contract involves degrading the levee, installing a slurry wall, rebuilding the crown, protecting and maintaining utilities, and pavement overlay at river mile R5, which is located near the California State University – Sacramento campus. The slurry wall will inhibit seepage through the levee.
“This project will begin next year,” said Corps American River project manager John Hoge, “because we have to degrade the levee to make the improvements and we cannot do that during the wet season.”
Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2011, with completion expected by July 2011.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District provides flood risk reduction, navigation, watershed planning and ecosystem services in parts of eight western states, including California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Wyoming.
