State Auditor Holds Informational Webinar for Qualified Citizens Redistricting Commission Applicants
Participants hear details on supplemental application, selection process

By: California State Auditor

SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 19 2010 - The California State Auditor's office held an informational webinar and conference call yesterday for all tentatively eligible applicants to the Citizens Redistricting Commission. The webinar was conducted to answer questions and encourage as many of the more than 25,000 applicants to complete their supplemental applications.

The supplemental application is the next step in the Commission application process, and voters who completed an initial application and were deemed "tentatively eligible" based on their responses to the initial application, must complete the supplemental application to be considered for appointment to the Commission. The deadline for completing the supplemental application is April 2, 2010.

"We are thrilled that more than 30,000 registered California voters took the first step in applying to serve on the state's very first Citizens Redistricting Commission," said Elaine M. Howle, California State Auditor. "Nearly 1,000 of the 25,000 tentatively eligible applicants have gone on to complete the supplemental application, but we want to encourage every applicant to take the next step and complete the supplemental application."

The supplemental application includes several essay questions, and requires three letters of recommendation.

"We understand that applicants have questions regarding the supplemental applications, and we wanted to offer all of them the assurance, advice and information they need to move forward and complete the process," Howle said. "We're hoping this webinar and conference call answered those questions and helped clarify the process."

The application process for the Citizens Redistricting Commission opened on December 15, 2009, and closed on February 16, 2010. More than 30,000 registered voters applied to the Commission.

Following the April 2 deadline for submitting supplemental applications, the three-member Applicant Review Panel will review the applicant qualifications and identify 120 of the most qualified applicants. Interviews for those 120 applicants will then be scheduled and the Applicant Review Panel will then narrow the pool to the most qualified 60.

>From there the Applicant Review Panel will submit the list of those 60 applicants to the California State Legislature. Legislative leadership has the option of removing up to 24 names from the list. From that list, the California State Auditor's office will then randomly select the first eight commissioners. Those eight commissioners will select the remaining six to establish the 14-member commission which will include, in total, five Republicans, five Democrats and four members from neither of those parties.

The supplemental application is available at www.WeDrawTheLines.ca.gov. A recorded version of Thursday's webinar is also available for viewing, for those applicants that could not participate in the live webinar/call at http://www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov/webinar.html
