Water and Mud Damage from Storms May be Covered by Auto Insurance

By: California Department of Insurance

Feb. 8, 2010 - California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner today reminded residents of Southern California ravaged by storms that many auto insurance policies – especially those with full physical damage coverage – will cover damage due to flooding and mudslides.

"My heart goes out to those who have survived the Station fires and now face water and mud damage," Commissioner Poizner said. "I encourage consumers who had their vehicles damaged or destroyed to check their auto insurance policies. Those who have full physical damage coverage will have the damage covered up to their policy limits."

Full physical damage coverage is an option that many consumers choose to purchase, but one that is not mandated by law. Full physical damage coverage covers damage to a car caused by reason other than collision, such as fire, theft, windstorm, flood, vandalism, etc.

Californians with insurance questions should contact the Department of Insurance’s help line at 800-927-HELP. The hotline handles hundreds of thousands of calls a year.
