Canyon Complex 0630CANYON COMPLEX:  Started: June 21, 2008; Cause: Lightning; Location: Feather River, Mount Hough and Beckwourth Ranger Districts; Acres: 37,831; Cost: $45,345,783; Resources:  2 crews, 1 helicopter, 1 engine, 2 dozers, 7 water tenders, 104 total personnel. Expected containment date for the Canyon Complex, because of the Belden Fire, is September 30, 2008.

News & Events for the Canyon Complex:

Crews have completed rehab work on all primary and contingency control lines as of today.

Interior burning continues to put up occasional smoke plumes from the Canyon Complex.  Several of these smoke plumes continue to concern residents.

Mop up of all smokes within 300 feet of the burned perimeter has been completed as of today.

Crews will begin systematic patrol of this complex today.

The Pacific Crest Trail is now open from State highway 70 South through the Bucks Area Wilderness.  It is closed from State Highway 70, North, and Northwest to the Pumas National Forest Boundary.

CANYON COMPLEX STATUS:  The potential for high fire behavior still exists within the Canyon Complex with re-burn potential low to moderate. Moderate fire behavior continues to be observed in isolated areas of interior unburned pockets; the expectation is to see occasional columns of smoke. Overall, fire behavior is currently low, with the fire backing downhill, smoldering and creeping. Rehab is 100 percent complete on both the north and south branches.  This fire is now in patrol status. The Belden fire is still only 70% contained.

Forest Closures: A new Pacific Crest Trail Closure (Forest Order No. 10-08) is now in effect. Also, go to www.fs.fed.us/r5/plumas/ for more information on forest closure Order No. 07-08 (Canyon Complex).  Both closures remain in effect at this time.

FIRE BEHAVIOR: Minimal fire activity at this time.
