NEVADA CITY, Calif. July 26, 2010 - As forecasted, lightning activity was intense on Sunday throughout California and Nevada. 6,129 lightning strikes for California alone sparked fires primarily in the northern portion of the state.
Aerial reconnaissance and ground crews are checking for undetected fires and some additional lightning activity is expected today.
The Russell Fire nine miles southeast of Little Valley, in Modoc County, CA is reported by Cal Fire at 200 acres. The fire is 1 of 15 lightning sparked fires in the Bieber area of Lassen County. A Red Flag Warning for dry thunderstorms continues for the area through this morning.
The Lassen National Forest had 19 reported fires, and crews responded to 19 fire reports on BLM-managed public lands.
The Modoc National Forest reports 47 confirmed fires. The largest of these fires is 20 acres, while the remainder range from one-tenth of an acre to 1 ½ acres.
Cal Fire reports 2 Fires for less than an acre in Shasta County and Siskiyou County - 4 Fires for 2 acres.
The Plumas National Forest: Papoose north of Squaw Valley (no acreage), Meadow View, north of Meadow View, approx. 15 acres and Gulch, west of Sugar Loaf, no estimate of acreage. Approximately 1,000 acres of the Constantia Complex are burning on the Plumas National Forest, mostly east of Hwyy 395.

The Tahoe National Forest received 67 lightning strikes. They caused 5 small fires: Marten (1 acre), Mill (1 acre), Neck (3 acres), Bar (1.5 acres) in the Sierraville/Loyalton area. These fires are either contained or out. One additional fire along the Sierra crest near Tinkers Knob - Tinker Fire (less than 1 acre) is in the mop-up stages.
Continued lightning is expected today on both the east and west side of the TNF, according to Public Affairs Officer Ann Westling.
