Cold Snaps Water Pipe at Rood Center

NEVADA CITY, Calif. Dec. 9 2009 - With morning temperatures hovering below 20 degrees F, the National Weather Service has been sending out freeze advisories with the sentence, "Locally there exists the potential for some locations to experience problems with waterlines," included.

The warnings turned out to be a good premonition today around noon as Nevada County's government center was briefly evacuated due to a broken sprinkler pipe. The broken pipe led to a drop in water pressure which automatically triggered the alarm heard throughout the building.

Three engines from local fire departments checked all floors of the Eric Rood Administrative Center while county workers were waiting in the cold.

The brackish brown water coming down from the ceiling of the entrance lobby was rapidly pushed out by county workers, but not before seeping into the board chamber. Damage to the carpet and no doubt a musty smell will be the result.

The building was pronounced safe after 30 minutes; staff and the public were allowed back inside while the cleanup continued.
