GRASS VALLEY, Calif. Nov. 21, 2008 - In 2005, Idaho-Maryland Mining Corporation filed applications with the City of Grass Valley to reopen the historic Idaho-Maryland Mine for gold extraction and on-site ceramics manufacturing. Grass Valley is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, an hour's drive north of Sacramento. The center of the mine's proposed operations would be less than two miles from downtown.
In late October 2008, the 640-page Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) was released for public review and comment. The DEIR is the third and final stage of the state-mandated environmental review process.
Just after the release of the DEIR, Citizens Looking At Impacts of Mining (CLAIM-GV) launched its public website and outreach campaign at www.claim-gv.org.
While CLAIM-GV feels that the proposed Idaho-Maryland Mine project is not a good fit for the community, the group feels that the best way to further that position is to let the facts speak for themselves. With that goal in mind, CLAIM-GV invites you to visit its user-friendly web site, www.claim-gv.org. The web page is a central place to find succinct, fact-based, and well-documented information on the project so that you can quickly browse the issues, link to more research, and come to your own conclusions.
One key feature on the website is a quick-reference 'impacts chart', showing all of the exact wording of environmental impacts, predicted severities, and proposed mitigations as they appear in the DEIR. You can also find a link to the entire DEIR on the front of CLAIM's web page.
The public comment period for the DEIR is open until January 20, 2009.
Official comments on the DEIR, which the consultant must respond to in the Final EIR, can be filed by one of these methods:
Fax: City of Grass Valley Planning Department, (530) 274-4399
Mail: City of Grass Valley, Idaho-Maryland Mine Project

CLAIM encourages you and your organizations to take a critical look at the DEIR, and to submit your concerns and comments through official channels to the City of Grass Valley before the January 20 deadline.
