July 1, 2009 - The Fourth of July heralds the official start of summer and represents one of our favorite American holidays. For companion animals however, the holiday festivities can cause severe anxiety and for some, even death.
Many dogs and cats are terrified by the sound of fireworks. Loud, crowded, hot, fireworks displays are no fun for pets, so please resist the urge to take them along to Independence Day festivities.
Keep your companions safe and cool inside in a sheltered area. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep your pet company while you attend Fourth of July parades, picnics and other celebrations.
If you know that your companion is seriously distressed by loud noises like thunder, gun fire or fireworks, consult with your veterinarian before July 4th for ways to help alleviate their fear or anxiety.
Too many animals have lost their lives when they have been struck by cars because they were panicked by the sound of fireworks and running scared. Just in case your companion does escape, make sure that he or she is wearing proper identification.
Picnics are great fun but many of the foods we humans love are potentially toxic to our pets. Foods like onions, chocolate, coffee, avocados, grapes and raisins can sometimes cause death. It is also important to keep alcoholic drinks out of the reach of your pets as well. Even citronella candles, insect coils and insect repellent products not specifically designed for animals can cause harm.
