By: Rex H. Marks, Captain, Grass Valley Police Department

GRASS VALLEY, CA July 13, 2009 - On Tuesday, August 4, 2009 neighborhoods throughout the City of Grass Valley are being invited to join thousand of communities nationwide for the 26th Annual National Night Out. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for, and participation in, anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals that our neighborhoods are organized and fighting.

On Tuesday, August 4th, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., the community of Grass Valley is invited to join the Grass Valley Police Department for an Open House. This event will feature:

Static Displays of police equipment
McGruff's Crime Prevention Tips
Information on starting a Neighborhood Watch Program
A Tour of Police Headquarters by police personnel
And more!

In further support of this national event, residents in neighborhoods throughout the City and across the nation are asked to lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors.

Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S territories, Canadian, and military bases worldwide. In all, over 37 million people participated. "This is a night for America to stand together to help discourage crime and promote neighborhood unity and make our city a safer place for everyone," said Grass Valley Chief of Police John Foster. The benefits of your involvement will extend well beyond one night.

For more information about National Night Out, or to have a police officer visit your neighborhood on Tuesday August 4th, please call the Grass Valley Police Department at 477-4600.
