Op-Ed: Jim Hurley: Cut library fines to the wealthy and then just lay back and enjoy the trickle-down

By: Jim Hurley, Nevada City, Calif.

Nov. 24, 2009 - Big rally at the Rood center this morning in opposition to privatizing the library. Inspiring, it was. I rushed over and took out a dozen books and I will return them all late. I put my library fines where my mouth is.

Which brings me to my solution to the economic woes at the library. There is a tried and true economic theory that is easily applied: Cut library fines to the wealthy and then just lay back and enjoy the trickle-down.

Nonsense you say? But look at the advantages of privatization. Look at the great job Blackwater has done in privatizing the war in Iraq.

And here in Nevada County LSSI will somehow be able to persuade the mass of volunteers who now give their time and energy freely to the library to then turn around and give that time and energy to LSSI in the future.

Furthermore LSSI will take a profit for their services and it will not cost us a dime. The reason we can’t do this in-house is because of our waste-fraud-and-abuse and their economies-of-scale. Buzz words you say? Well maybe, but if buzzing is good enough for the bees, it is good enough for me. Buzz off.
