Klamath National Forest Lightning Strike Update July 26

By: Tom Lavagnino, Klamath National Forest

Yreka, CA July 26, 2010 – The Sunday afternoon lightning storm across Siskiyou County was quite active and fire suppression and initial attack crews were busy responding to numerous reports of smoke and fire. Reconnaissance aircraft will be patrolling the county today, and the next few days searching for any signs of fire.

One fire was reported approximately ½ mile upstream from the community of Happy Camp along State Highway 96 (in the Cade Mountain area) and was quickly contained with fire line, fire engine and crew support. It is estimated to be 1.2 acres in size and does not appear to be lightning caused.

As of this morning, The Klamath National Forest has a ½ acre lightning-caused fire in the Masterson Meadows/Lake area of southern Scott Valley. It is staffed and expected to be contained soon.

The Klamath National Forest has dispatched 3 fire engines and the 20-person Klamath Hot-Shots to support the Modoc National Forest and one fire engine to assist with fires on the Lassen National Forest. One fire engine was sent from the Six Rivers National Forest to assist with fire on Happy Camp/Oak Knoll Ranger District.

It seems that most of the lightning activity detected yesterday was in the northeastern part of California on the Lassen National Forest and later progressing to the north on the Modoc National Forest.

Lightning is again predicted for today, and fire managers are prepared to quickly respond to any reported fire.
