Lightning Brings Fire to Modoc National Forest

By: Jim Gumm, Modoc National Forest

July 26, 2010 - A fast moving lightning storm struck the Modoc National Forest area on July 25, 2010. The results of the storm as off 8:00 P.M. are 47 confirmed fires. The largest of these fires is 20 acres, while the remainder range from one-tenth of an acre to 1 ½ acres.

Acting Forest Fire Management Officer Tyler Otterson, after mobilizing Modoc N.F. units, has requested and received help from surrounding National Forests in the form of ten wildland engines and four wildland firefighting handcrews.

More weather is expected on Monday, but the current forecast predicts these events will contain more moisture than Sunday's storm which should reduce the numbers of any new fires and help the firefighters on the ground deal with the existing ones.
