NEVADA CITY, Calif. July 14, 2009 - When street vendors and musicians set up their wares late afternoon on Wednesday (July 15) it will be the 19th year that the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce has hosted "Summer Nights" - three Wednesdays in July when locals and tourists take to the streets to eat, drink, shop and listen to 5 stages of music on warm summer evenings.
Barbara Tanner, the Chamber's coordinator for Summer Nights, says she's excited about something new this year. "We're going to have a small Green Expo on North Pine Street with 7 vendors," Tanner said. "There is even a company called True Health that will be selling an earth-friendly water bottle." Other Green Expo vendors are Nevada County Recycles; Alliance for a Post Petroleum Economy (APPLE); PG&E; Haute Trash; the Sierra Green Building Association; and Being Green, a Nevada City retail business.
Summer nights is an all-ages event. Activities for the children include Pony Up, live pony rides and motorized Fuzzy Pets that children can ride. Both those events will take place in the New York Hotel parking lot off Broad Street. There is a change for both.
A mini Growers Market, with 10 vendors selling fruits, vegetables and flowers will be in front of The National Hotel. Across the street members of the Nevada County Model A Club will have some of their finest antique cars on display in front of the old Broad Street Furnishings building. Other classic cars will be scattered throughout downtown Nevada City, showcasing this year's Summer Nights theme -- "Cool Music and Classic Cars."
Downtown Nevada City will be closed to motorized traffic during the free event, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. The 5 stages of entertainment will feature music and entertainment by Bill Dickson/Beth Jane; Troupe Al Ama (bellydancers); Remley; Ludi Hinrichs; and The Nut Boyz.
Some restaurants on Broad Street will sell food in the street; all other food vendors will be in the Food Court, the parking lot next to the Bank of America on Commercial Street. Tanner said there are 13 committed food vendors for the Food Court.
A shuttle service will run from the Rood Center from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. since parking is difficult on event nights. Cost for the shuttle is $5 for a round trip. The next Summer Nights will be on July 22 and July 29 and each features different entertainment acts.
