Nevada CityJuly 13, 2009 - The Nevada County District Attorney's Office filed felony charges of arson of an inhabited structure, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted grand theft automobile and vandalism for breaking out the window of an NCSO patrol car against Alfredo Torres, age 21, a transient, following a joint investigation by Cal Fire, Nevada County Sheriff and Grass Valley Police of the fire that destroyed the Cedar Ridge Market on July 12, 2009. The Singh family was present sleeping in their residence above the market when the fire ignited below.
Assistant DA Anna Ferguson commented, "The victims are very lucky to have awakened in time to escape the flames." Torres was arraigned this afternoon. His bail was increased to $80,000 and the case was set over for felony conference on Thursday at 1pm.
