The 7th Annual Abundance Swap in Nevada City on Dec. 12
A New Local Tradition Takes Root

By: Susan Nance, Nevada City

NEVADA CITY, Calif. December 8, 2009 - The holidays are here again and millions of Americans will be stressed out and overspent, buying millions of dollars of new stuff created with new resources from the earth. But some of the good stuff we already have isn't being well used or fully enjoyed. And giving gifts is supposed to be a joyous experience. Most of us want to continue doing so.

Because of this, a new local tradition of gift giving is rising in popularity without being harsh on the planet, spending money and creating more waste: the 7th Annual Abundance Swap presented by the Nevada City School of the Arts and the APPLE Center this Saturday, December 12th, 2:00 to 4:00PM. It will take place in the Alpha Building (formerly Broad St. Furnishings), is completely FREE and easy to do.

Just find 3-10 quality items in your home, shop or office that someone would enjoy as a gift... fun, useful, interesting or beautiful items, new or in really good shape that aren't important to you anymore. "Quality" doesn't mean "expensive." It means well-made, worthwhile, likely to be valued. Price doesn't matter. The gifts should be unwrapped items that someone would enjoy.

Abundance Swaps have been gaining momentum across the nation as citizens become more conscious that 25% of America's waste is produced between Thanksgiving and New Years alone. Not to mention the extra financial burden most Americans undergo struggling to make ends meet. As shoppers learn to tighten their belts unlike ever before many are beginning to realize the value of "repurposing" unwanted items sitting forgotten in their closet corners.

The 7th Annual Abundance Swap is the solution to an outdated tradition of buy, buy, buy and ultimately is a community gathering to celebrate our abundance and offer an alternative to the Holiday shopping season. Bring what you can. Take what you need. Share in our Abundance! This will be a holiday shopping event, spreading around the pleasure of giving and receiving with no money exchanged and no additional demands on our Earth's resources.
