Nevada City September 10, 2010 – The APPLE Center has been open almost a year at 412 Commercial Street in Nevada City and it’s been year of exciting first, growth and community building around the topics of sustainability, resilient economies, and environmental stewardship.
Starting in September, the programming at the Center will take a break from large public forums and start smaller, more intimate discussion groups. Their goal is to facilitate more idea sharing, discussion and personal connection to the culture of sustainability.
The Fall Discussion Series will serve as a pilot for this type of program formatting. Center organizers hope to learn best practices from this series in order to launch a more comprehensive skill-based and small group learning series in 2011 with classes on everything backyard chicken care to community activism. Something like a Sustainable Living School.
The fall series will feature two tracks: ‘Think Globally’ and ‘Act Locally.’ The first track will focus on the global picture – what is happening on economic, environmental and energy fronts. It will challenge participants to step back from their pre-determined worldview and critically investigate the big picture and varying perspectives.
“Einstein told us that we ‘cant solve the worlds problems with the same thinking that created them.’ We’re working to nurture new ways of thinking to solve these unprecedented global challenges,” explained APPLE Center executive director, Mali Dyck.
The second track: Act Locally, will focus on the actions individuals, neighbors and concerned citizens can take in their daily lives to help transition our community to a more sustainable, resilient future. “People are hungry for suggestions, we get asked all the time ‘what can I do to live more sustainably?’ Again, we’re here to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable culture, that starts in each of our homes.” Added Dyck.
The discussion series starts September 22nd. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. For more information, schedule, fees, etc. contact the APPLE Center at 478-1700 or Info@APPLECenter.org or go to www.APPLECenter.org.
